e are inviting you to step back
in time and enjoy the splendor of yesterdays in our magnificent Regency house
located in the heart of the
historic
district of Niagara on the Lake.
The house was built by John Lyons, a barrister and Registrar of the United Counties
of Lincoln and Haldimand in 1835 on a one-acre lot that came by way of Catherine
Geale whom John had married on June 26, 1833. It was not planned as the usual
residence for a large family, but rather a home where entertainment could be
provided. The old chronicle announcements and Catherine's granddaughter Madeline
Geale's poems recall lavish gatherings and balls given by John and Catherine,
and later by her son Bernard in this handsome, two story house at the corner
of King and Centre Street.
Keeping in line with the Lyons' "tradition", our bed and breakfast is not only
a superb accommodation but also an
establishment
where special events are taking place all year round. We offer to arrange wedding
receptions, anniversary and birthday parties, romantic getaways, golf weekends,
wine tours, horse and carriage rides, adventurous white water or nostalgic old
steam boat rides on the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, fascinating helicopter
and airplane flights and much more for the total satisfaction of our guests.
However, if you are looking for a quiet place to relax between performances
of the renowned Shaw Festival, our home is like "your home away from home".
Famous restoration architect Peter John Stokes meticulously restored principal
rooms on the grand floor to reminiscent the gracious living of the Victorian
period. The fireplaces with their large mantle pieces in the dining and living
rooms lend themselves perfectly to afternoon and evening fireside conversations.
Magnificent, 12 foot high walls all through the house are a complement for the
display of our contemporary Canadian artist Elena Solomon of Hamilton .
The specious, and elegant high ceiling guest rooms are romantically furnished
in period style queen sleigh beds, Victorian armoires and dressers,
comfortable
reading chairs and private bathrooms.
Every morning features a gourmet four-course candlelight breakfast, all prepared
with fresh local produce.
In the spring, summer and fall, you might relax in our beautiful English gardens
that still have many plants of early 19th century gardens: crown imperials,
the old fashioned "pinny" (the feather-leafed peony), the Star of Bethlehem
and the rare white wisteria.
In the winter, you can lounge by the fire with a good book from our library,
a game of checkers, backgammon, or bridge, or
visit
with friends and enjoy a complimentary glass of sherry, a cup of tea and some
homemade cookies.
To spoil you even more, massage, manicure and pedicure can be arranged for an
extra charge all year round.
