River Inn is the island's first and only five star
waterfront bed and breakfast. This stately 18-room mansion
was built in 1919 by U.S. millionaire Senator James
P. McNichol. It is situated on a private, 26 acre knoll
that overlooks over 1,000 feet of saltwater frontage
on the Cardigan River and
the marina beyond. Guests often enjoy sitting on the
terrace or in the gazebo watching lobster fishers and
pleasure craft bound to sea. The estate also borders
on the Confederation Trail which is very popular with
hikers and cyclists.
The
three-story mansion's striking architecture is a blend
of French and English motifs topped by a ten-gabled
roof that flares with daring ge ometries.
Liberal use of native red sandstone in the first floor
decor and three massive chimneys accentuate the island's
natural beauty. We offer a choice of fireplaced two
room suites or guestrooms each with ensuite whirlpool
bath, period antiques, air conditioning, cable TV/VCR,
and telephone. Enjoy a full fireside breakfast in
our dining room and choose from a six-item menu. Socialize
in the great room, library, or sunroom.
Outside
the grounds feature magnificent linden trees that are
the largest on the island. Local brides from Cardigan
Village often are photographed beneath them. Relax in
a comfortable gazebo overlooking the water. The estate
has been featured in local newspaper, book, and magazine
printings and on CBC television. Rated 5 stars by Canada
