Oaxaca, Mexico

he beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca beckons you. Located south of Mexico City in a valley surrounded by mountains, it has a pleasant climate throughout the year and a rich cultural, social and archaeological Zapotec and Mixtec heritage, glimpsed today in its colorful markets, lovely woven articles, art and traditions. Its extraordinary architecture has been called by UNESCO the Cultural Patrimony of Humanity. Imagine yourself leisurely sipping coffee at one of the sidewalk cafes in the arcades surrounding the zocalo observing the ethnic diversity of the passinglb2.jpg - 19645 Bytes scene -- women from the villages in their colorful skirts and blouses perhaps balancing a big basket of mangos on their heads, men and women in business or casual dress, children with their balloons, men in loose white trousers and straw hats, and in the evening a band playing in the charming gazebo in the center of the plaza. The city offers museums, theater, grand churches, a symphony orchestra, markets, galleries and restaurants as well as delicious food and the warmth of its people -- all just waiting for you to enjoy.

Las Bugambilias (The Bougainvilleas) is your home in Oaxaca. We receive you in an ambiance of warmth and tranquility. We are located within the historic center of town just 5 minutes from the zocalo and 2 blocks from the lb3.jpg - 26726 Bytes "Andador turistico," (an area of beautiful churches, galleries, shops, and libraries). We are also within walking distance of other interesting areas of the city. We have 6 double rooms, 2 single rooms and a suite for 4 persons -- all with private bath and all decorated tastefully with art and antiques of the region.

The typical breakfasts are prepared with fresh and healthy ingredients and are served between 8 and 10 A.M. in the main dinning room. We can adjust the menu for special diets. You may choose to have lunch or dinner at the Cafe and Gallery, La Olla, a cozy corner at the entrance of the house where colonial art and Oaxacan traditions are combined.

Our family can help you to become acquainted with the city of Oaxaca and its environs with special tours which not only take you to the usual attractions of the city such as the archaeological areas of Monte Alban and Mitla, but also give you glimpses of indigenous life as depicted through our visits to sites not usually available to tourists. Depending upon the time of year in which you visit, you may participate with our family in celebrations such as the Day of the Dead festival, a "posada" in our home during Christmas, Noche de los Milagros (Night of Miracles) at the end of the year, our celebration of Holy Week, and the largest fiesta in Oaxaca, the "Guelaguetza", which takes place in summer. Learn to make Oaxacan "mole" and other traditional dishes in our kitchen. Contact us for a complete list of such offerings.

Las Bugambilias offers you the opportunity to enhance your vacation by trying the traditional indigenous herbal sweat bath--Temazcal-- the nahuatl word for bath house. The traditional baths were used by the Aztecs as a therapeutic cleansing and purification and also for rituals. We invite you to take advantage of an unforgetable experience -- a journey to the indigenous past through the temazcal bath -- where the combination of the energies of fire wood, rocks, water and herbs purifies your body, your mind and your spirit. The bath house is constructed according to traditional specifications and is located in a lovely garden -- a gift of nature which contributes to your feeling of tranquility, peace and rest. You can observe closely and faithfully indigenous culture in an extraordinary way. Our techniques of soft massage will relax, revitalize and energize your body.

Come and enjoy the magic and the charm of Oaxaca. Las Bugambilias awaits you!
