Mary's Place is a fine example of Georgian architecture in Edinburgh's
New Town. The house was completed around 1829 and was part of John Learmouth's
estate. The name
Mary's Place came from his daughter, Mary. The house is situated within
the community of Stockbridge "a village within the city" which
is rich both in history and present day facilities.
Raeburn Place was
called after Sir Henry Raeburn, whose most famous painting is the "Rev.
Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch" and which today hangs in the
National Gallery on Princes Street. Many famous people of note were
residents of Stockbridge, including James Young (inventor of chloroform),
George Meikle Kemp (architect of the Scott Monument) and Adam Smith
one of Scotland's best known philanthropists.
