he Joshua Grindle Inn is set on a two-acre estate with views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Mendocino Bay, and the quaint village of Mendocino. Six of the ten spacious guest rooms have fireplaces and two others offer ocean views. All have private baths and comfortable sitting areas. There are five rooms in the main house and five in the cottage and water tower behind the main house. Each are beautifully decorated with Early American antique and pine furnishings. The colorful and lovingly maintained gardens, visible from the rooms, beckon the guests to take a pleasant stroll and to relax in the Adirondack chairs on the lawns. Here, guests can enjoy the surroundings and perhaps catch up on some reading, or play a game of croquet.

Guests awaken to a delicious morning meal served in our breakfast room. This is a time to enjoy conversation with new acquaintances around the c.1830 pine harvest table, while savoring fresh baked muffins or scones, a fritatta or quiche, a selection of fruits and cereals, as well as yogurt, coffee and herbal teas. Every morning offers a new treat as the menu constantly changes with seasonal availability of the freshest ingredients. After breakfast, guests often choose to take a stroll along the headlands to admire the rugged, mystical, sometimes fog-shrouded beauty of the coast. The entire village can be enjoyed on foot for it is but a short walk from the inn to the restaurants, galleries and shops.

The Joshua Grindle Inn is a place to curl up with a good book by a glowing fire or simply walk down a quiet path. The grandeur of the scenery revitalizes the spirit, giving one the chance to relax and enjoy life in a "New England" setting that time forgot.

Present day Mendocino has a strong commitment to the arts with the focal point being the Art Center, three blocks from the Inn. The Center and its Showcase gallery on Main Street display the works of the students and graduates of its programs. Offering a wide variety of classes, workshops, festivals, fairs and entertainment to the public, the Center is the cultural hub of the North Coast. Mendocino hosts numerous private galleries as well, which offer a wide selection of local artists and media, including paintings, wood carvings and furniture, wire sculpture, ceramics and weaving, to mention but a few.

The performing arts also play an important role in the life of the Mendocino community year-round. The Mendocino Theater Company, Gloriana Opera Company, Mendocino Dance Series, Warehouse Repertory Theater and The Mendocino Music Festival are a few of the groups providing a wealth of entertainment and cultural activity.

There are many fine restaurants in Mendocino which offer creative and gourmet meals. Food for every taste is offered in a variety of interesting and intimate settings, from French to California cuisine. The Joshua Grindle Inn has a book complete with menus from all the best restaurants in the area, and our innkeepers are delighted to make lunch or dinner recommendations and reservations.

Mendocino is not only a special place because of its fine galleries and restaurants, but is also known for the jewel-like quality of the scenery and its "small town" culture. The village is set on the edge of a rugged coastline overlooking a wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean. To the west, the view is of the headlands and ocean, and to the east is dense redwood forest.

It is not surprising that the Mendocino area has such a romantic pull on the imagination. Many people come here to honeymoon or to retreat from city pressures. The pace is easy without distractions of modern life, and many find time to enjoy the peace and quiet and the salty tang of the sea air. The Joshua Grindle Inn is a place to curl up with a good book by a glowing fire or simply walk down a quiet path. The grandeur of the scenery revitalizes the spirit, giving one the chance to relax and enjoy life in a "New England" setting that time forgot.
