n the grounds of one of Volcano's oldest family homes, in the upland rainforest, Volcano Country Cottages is nestled among large, sheltering trees, easy walking distance to the village's stores and restaurants.

The Artist's House is a cozy two-bedroom cottage with a fully-equipped kitchen stocked with yummy breakfast basics. A wood-burning stove keeps everything toasty on those chilly winter nights at 4000-foot elevation. In keeping with its tradition as an artist's home and studio, works by some of the Big Island's best-known artists grace the walls. An easel and art supplies are available should the Volcano experience ignite in our guests the same inspiration that has moved so many other artists here. The house sleeps up to seven with fold-out beds.

The Ohelo Berry Cottage is a sweet studio cottage with mini-kitchen stocked with breakfast fare. Its bright and comfortable furnishings promise a delightful retreat. Best for couples, one or two children can be accommodated with a futon.

Located in the heart of Volcano Village, Volcano Country Cottages offers cozy, comfortable, affordable bed and breakfast accommodations, for singles, couples or families, within a five-minute drive of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, headquarters to the world's most active "drive-in" volcano, Kilauea, where you can hike, bike, horseback ride, or golf, sip locally made wines, and enjoy the cool, mountain climate.

The village is centrally located for exploring the three districts of Hawai`i Island's east side, Puna, Ka`u and Hilo. Besides discovering the magic of the Park, visitors can observe hawksbill turtles basking on the glistening shores of Punalu`u Black Sand Beach; soak in the warm pond of Puala`a in lower Puna; take a lovely detour on the four-mile scenic route, north of Hilo, then visit the 420-foot falls at Akaka; check out the well-stocked farmer's markets in Hilo (Wednesdays and Saturdays) or in Volcano Village itself (on Sundays - go early! the good stuff goes fast).

There is so much to see, and there are so many activities to enjoy; but part of Volcano's charm is the laid-back peacefulness of this forested community. Many artists and scientists, families and retirees live here full- or part-time, and while they often meet and "talk story" at the Post Office or the Farmer's Market at the community center, they love the quiet and solitude the area offers. With no street lights or sidewalks, on narrow, sometimes unpaved roads, the village offers visitors a chance to slow their pace.
