Sorry-no rollaways or cots. All rooms have individual air conditioners & heaters. Rates include delicious, gourmet breakfast, late afternoon refreshments, and rainy day teas. Some rooms have gas stoves or fireplaces.Discounted rates until mid-June and after mid-October.We are a no smoking property, gladly accept children 12 and older, but Falke, our resident Brittany, objects to other pets, sorry.Mount Desert Island is a place unique in the world. In one spot you can find deep, clear ocean, sand and cobblestone beaches, forests old and new, clear mountain lakes that are still drinkable, streams babbling under the trees, and bare granite mountains, all for you to see and enjoy. So, plan to breathe our air, feel our granite, sand, and pine needles underfoot, and hike our 150 miles of trails.Bar Harbor has been a “destination resort” for over 150 years. Although summer is the most popular season, the area is a magnificent place in fall, winter and spring. There are a wide variety of outdoor activities for all levels of “rusticators”. From the town’s piers “set sail” on a friendship sloop, or larger schooner; cruise the harbor on a nature cruise and see bald eagles, ospreys, harbor porpoises and seals in their natural habitats; or motor out 15 miles to see the Atlantic Puffin or 30 miles out to see one of the earth’s most magnificent creatures—the whale (four species are common & the ships guarantee sightings). The island is home to more than 50 fine restaurants, most of which serve the traditional Maine lobster, but where visitors can sample Atlantic salmon and fresh fish caught that day (if you’ve never had a fish fresh out of the ocean you’re in for a real treat). For those who prefer meat, how about a quail appetizer followed by roast duck or a rack of lamb. For those whose tastes vary, there are Thai, Italian, true gourmet and casual family style, vegetarian, Mediterranean and, of course Cajun (the Cajuns came from here originally) restaurants to tempt you.But the crown jewel of our island is Acadia National Park. Acadia was formed from land donated by benefactors like John D. Rockefeller Jr., who constructed a 57 mile web of crushed gravel carriage roads ideal for hiking, biking or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride on, since they are closed to motorized vehicles. There are many “must see” attractions such as Cadillac Mountain (where you can be the first person in the US to see the sunrise), Thunder Hole, Sand Beach, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond, Somes Sound and more. Most can be seen by car, but the real beauty of the island is best seen by hiking-- take casual strolls along the Shore Path in front of historic “cottages” or more strenuous hikes up any of the 18 mountains on the island. And in the spring and summer you can witness the recovery of an endangered species as Peregrine Falcons nest on our cliffs. Our unique circumstance of glacially carved coastline and sea where high and low tide varies as much as 14 feet provides a unique opportunity to see life in the inter-tidal zone “up close and personal” by sea kayaking; to view nature and the wildlife in pristine waters only reachable this way.
