"The
Captain Briggs House Inn is spotless and cheery. My room in this beautifully
restored 1853 house had gorgeous original hardwood floors, two sunny
windows, a double and a twin bed and a private bath." -- Daisann
McLane, The New York Times, August 22, 1999

1862 the house was purchased by John Alphonzo Briggs who was seventh
generation descendant of Richard Warren who came to New England on
the Mayflower in 1620. John was born in 1810 and became a successful
entrepreneur. He was a ship carpenter and ship builder. He launched
twelve vessels from South Freeport shipyard and was listed as master
carpenter for eight of them. His largest vessel was the "JOHN
A. BRIGGS", 2110.27 tons with three decks and three masts. Over
seven thousand people watched the launching of the vessel in 1878
