The Keeper's House is an operating lighthouse station located on a rugged remote island in the wilderness area of Acadia National Park. Guests arrive on the mailboat from Stonington, winding through a chain of emerald isles before landing on Isle Au Haut. The lighthouse is just as it was when built in 1907. No telephones, no electricity, no passing road, no crowds of milling tourists or souvenir shops. Evening lighting is provided by gas lights, candles, kerosene lanterns, moon beams and, occasionally, the northern lights. Large cozy bedrooms are furnished with painted antiques.
All meals are included in the room rate. Fresh native seafood and chicken with a gourmet touch are featured. Every morsel is fresh and original, leaving the lighthouse kitchen always filled with the aroma of simmering soups and baking bread. Guests are served family-style in the dining room facing the light tower.
Deer, osprey, mink, seal and porpoise visit the inn by land and shore. The solitary, sparsely used trails of Acadia are at our doorstep to the south and a short walk to the north leads to a tiny fishing village. The Keeper's House is on the National Register of Historic Places and the inn has been featured in dozens of national publications ....but the experience here is not for everyone; the remote nature of the island and the frontier amenities at the lighthouse beckon the adventurous traveler who knows how to find gratification in the undeveloped splendor of thick wood and virgin shore.
