eturn
to Victorian Duluth when prancing horses drew carriages down cobblestone
streets and steam powered ships navigated the Great Lakes. The year
was 1895 and A. Charles Weiss was building his stately home in Duluth.
An accomplished
gentleman of the press, Weiss became the editor and publisher of the
city's first successful newspaper, the Duluth Herald. Both he
and his wife, Mary, were prominent civic leaders, giving much of their
time and talents to community interests.
The warmth and elegance
of the Victorian home they built welcomes you today as the A. Charles
Weiss Inn. Restored to its historic elegance by the owners, Dave
Lee and Peg Kirsch Lee, they and their family await the opportunity
to host your stay in Duluth.
The sun will greet
you in the morning room, which is brightened by gleaming birdseye maple
woodwork. Recline with a classic in the library, beautifully decorated
with cherry wood and tiled fireplace. The parlour is heavily adorned
in exquisite dark oak surrounding a marble fireplace. Rich white oak
elaborately decorates the inn's dining room and antique furnishings
will add to your enjoyment of these rooms.
Guestrooms include:
- Elias
Reuben -- Pen a letter to a loved one from the mission
style oak desk in this room. While relaxing on the queen size bed,
enjoy the authentic 19th century engravings and books. The private
bath is furnished with a large porcelain tub and original pedestal
sink, and is right next door.
-
- Gretel
Lenore -- The striking red on white of the paper in this
room will convince you that you have indeed stepped back in time.
Rest your head on the feather pillows of this turn of the century
brass bed. An oval window provides natural lighting in your private
bath.
-
- Elsa
Amelia -- Bay windows adorned in white lace greet you as
you enter this cheerful room. Snuggle into the full-size sleigh bed,
surrounded by floral print paper with deep lavender trim. Private
bath.
-
- The
Herald Suite -- Rich green wallpaper, an ornate ceiling
lamp and a private fireplace welcome you into the sitting room of
the suite. In the adjoining bedroom you will find a queen size white
iron and brass bed. There is also a small dressing room with sink
and a mirror. The full private bath is just down the hall.
-
- The
Inkwell -- The rich blue of
a printer's inkwell is captured by the paper in this room. You're
certain to be comfortable in the queen size bed, while watching the
soft flicker from an old-fashioned gas fireplace. The double whirlpool
in the private bath will complete your satisfaction.
A full breakfast,
complete with hand ground coffee and an assortment of teas, is served
in the dining room each morning at 9 am.
Duluth, rich in
history, is also rich in entertainment opportunities. The Lakewalk,
which leads to the charming Canal Park Area, is a short three blocks
from the Inns's front porch. For a complete visitor's guide, call (800)
