Plantation has been called "The most beautiful plantation home
in the Natchez area" by Sam Wilson, noted New Orleans architect.
It is located about 8 miles south of Natchez just off US 61. On 360
acres of rolling pasture and timberland, there are nature trails throughout
this game preserve. The homes date back to 1785 and are surrounded by
magnificent old Live Oak trees. They are filled with antiques and works
of art. The guest house has three bedrooms, two with king-size beds
and one twin bedroom--all with private baths. In the morning a hot Southern
style breakfast is served in the meeting room. A tour of the main house
is included.
There is much history attached to Oakland. Andrew
Jackson and his bride-to-be, Rachel Robards, stayed here in 1790. The
first Treasurer of the Mississippi Territory built Oakland. The founder
of the Milwaukee Journal was raised here. A slave who was born and raised
at Oakland in 1880 bought the plantation and prospered as a practicing
doctor and surgeon, selling the best moonshine whiskey during Prohibition
as well. Oakland is on the National Register of Historic Homes.
There are seven fishing ponds, a tennis court,
canoeing and hiking. Oakland is like a peaceful and serene park away
from it all. It is a perfect spot for honeymooners, and anyone who enjoys
country living. Children of all ages are invited.
