he Verandas is an elegant 8,500 square foot Victorian Italianate Mansion located in the beautiful Wilmington, NC, Historic District. Only two blocks from the Cape Fear River and the Riverwalk, this award-winning Inn is walking distance to upscale shops, clubs, theatre, and fine restaurants. It is only a fifteen minute drive to Wrightsville Beach - one of the finest ocean beaches in North Carolina.

Originally built in 1853 by Captain Benjamin Beery, the structure suffered extensive fire and water damage in 1992. Boarded up and decaying, the mansion was purchased by the current owners. After extensive demolition, including the removal of more than 80,000 pounds of plaster, 10,000 pounds of radiators, and more than 20 dump trucks of debris, the entire house was stripped down to it's studding. A completely new infrastructure of the house was then created with new wiring, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, insulation, etc., even a sprinkler system and emergency lighting were added to insure the ultimate safety of guests!

Once the new infrastructure was completed, the antebellum mansion was then professionally decorated to create both a professional business atmosphere for the sophisticated executive, and to provide a comfortable and romantic weekend retreat pampering weekend visitors French, English and American antiques as well as traditional furniture fill the grand, yet elegant, light-filled rooms. Original artwork and accessories abound throughout the inn and guestrooms. Elegant and spacious; comfortable and friendly.

Guests are encouraged to socialize in the two luxurious parlors, play the piano, daydream on the four verandas, or just linger on the garden terrace. The more energetic can climb the spiral stairs to the enclosed cupola on top of the house where a panoramic sunset view of the skyline of downtown Wilmington, or the Battleship North Carolina may be enjoyed.

All eight guest rooms are large corner rooms with state of the art individual climate control. Some have decorative fireplaces. Guest may choose king, queen, or twin beds. Cable TV, as well as telephones with computer jacks and desks are standard fare. All rooms have luxurious private baths featuring marble floors, marble vanities, oversized mirrors, and garden size soaking tubs with showers. Caswell Massey amenities ensure personal comfort.

Afternoon complimentary beverages and a full gourmet breakfast served in the formal, but not stuffy, dining room have been called "social hours" by some guests. Special breakfast dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

The goal of the award-winning Verandas is for you to feel welcomed and comfortable either as a new or returning guest.
