The 1889 WhiteGate Inn and Cottage is located on the tree-lined National Historic Chestnut Street District in Asheville, North Carolina. The Inn is a Shingle-style House surrounded by beautiful grounds, overlooking downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1997, the Inn received the Griffin Award for Restoration from the Preservation Society of Asheville. The 1889 WhiteGate Inn and Cottage is within 4 blocks walking distance to downtown Asheville, and minutes to the world-famous Biltmore House and Gardens and their historic and interesting attractions. The charming WhiteGate Inn offers today's comforts with yesterday's ambiance. The Inn is furnished with period antiques, fine furniture, and collectibles. You are welcomed into the parlor, which features one of the Inn's two original fireplaces. The mantle is home to a collection of antique German Beer Steins. Relax in one of the parlor chairs and view the contemporary original oil painting entitled "A Still Wind Blows" that was done by Elizabeth Versace for the Inn.
The Living room is warm and inviting with a comfortable sofa and wing back chairs, a fireplace for the warm glow in the fall and winter, and a respite from the every day stress. You can enjoy playing checkers or backgammon at our game table or simply curl up with a book or magazine in one of our soft stuffed club chairs. The living room area has a unique collection of art glass, family antiques and other fine collectibles, making it a welcoming area for afternoon and evening refreshments.
Relax in the spacious solarium looking out over our East lawn, downtown Asheville, and the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. Enjoy an evening beverage while listening to vintage 45's on our Rock~Ola Wurlitzer Juke Box and admire the colorful sunsets. The dining room is furnished with a collection of antiques, including an early 18th century, English hanging corner cupboard that houses a collection of English Toby mugs, a Windsor, late 18th century pine settle, and an ornately carved Empire sideboard. The carved alabaster light fixture and matching wall sconces are original to the house. The four distinctive guest rooms in the Inn, each honoring distinguished American poets, feature private baths, air-conditioning, and queen-size beds. The rooms are each uniquely decorated, reflecting different period styles, including English, Arts and Crafts, and Victorian. Poetry volumes by each featured poet are included in each room.
