Located in the Seacoast Region of Southern New Hampshire, near the University of New Hampshire, the Inn is 5 miles west of Historic Portsmouth, Strawberry Banke Museum, outlet shopping, and the Rugged Coast of Maine.

This newly restored 1649 Homestead and 1795 Carriage House overlooks its formal gardens, the Oyster River, and the Old Mill Falls. The oldest house in the seacoast region offers an authentic glimpse of Colonial Life.

"Maples" with it's four fireplaces and Georgian furnishings offers fine dining in open hearth winter kitchen. The "Tavern" with it's granite walls, fireplace and massive beamed ceiling provides a cozy spot for casual dining. "The Conservatory" is a delightful outdoor place to enjoy casual dining among Wisteria vines in the shade of an English Grape Arbor.

The Inn is located just a few blocks the University of New Hampshire and the fabulous new Whittemore Center Stadium and Center for the Arts. In Durham you can enjoy our local Theaters and Art Galleries, roam the Historic District and the John Sullivan Park.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES:

• Special features include the important ffrost Sawyer Homestead house with its structural and decorative elements carefully restored including indian shutters, her 10 original fireplaces, and the summer kitchen which is now part of the tavern.
• One can view the orignial 10" x 40 ft hand dug well, the pond, the formal terraced gardens, with the orignal stone walls in place, the 250 year old grove of giant sugar maples, and the adjoining Town Landing Park.
• This important historic site was the first house in the first settlement on the backwaters of the Great Bay. It was the site of numberous Indian attacks, and the landing upon which the Inn is situated, was the site for shipbuilding and the lumber trade in Colonial Times. Munitions were stored in the Homestead during the Revolutionary War.
