Casa del Gavilan (House of the hawk) is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, six miles south of Cimarron, New Mexico, overlooking the famed Santa Fe Trail. Built in the early 1900's by the respected eastern industrialist, J.J. Nairm, the gleaming white adobe required eight years of meticulous planning and careful construction before it was completed. Artists from all fields enjoyed the Nairm's hospitality and their magnificent casa. The Casa is located on 225 acres of beautiful pine and cedar populated countryside. Rising above Casa del Gavilan, the famed peak "Tooth of Time" fills the western horizon, catching the full play of light from the early sun. The eastern vista spans the valley of Cimarron, the rugged beauty of Philmont Scout Ranch, and the rolling grasslands of Philmont's buffalo pasture. The majesty of the American West remains relatively unchanged...uncompromised. Here, earth and sky are cimarron---Spanish for "wild" or "unbroken".

Built in traditional adobe fashion with vigas, twelve-foot ceilings, and eighteen-inch walls, Casa del Gavilan is fully appreciated as a splendid retreat. Sky, mountain and valley seem to reach forever from the porches and gardens. Inside comforting walls, museum-quality Southwestern antiques, works of art, and handmade furnishings blend harmoniously to nurture thinking, relaxing, and enjoying family and friends. Each room has its unique charm, its own stories about the celebrated and talented people who have enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the Casa in the past. At night, in front of a crackling fire or under a canopy of stars, you can almost feel the spirits of the Anasazi and Ute, mountain men and Santa Fe traders, cowboys and conquistadores whose journeys led them this way long ago.

Each morning begins with the aroma of coffee and tea scenting the crisp mountain air. A hearty breakfast awaits with fruits and juices, eggs, country meats and grains. Your Casa breakfast is taken leisurely in the dining room or on the eastern patio so that you may enjoy the colors of the morning light. It is common to see deer wandering through the Casa grounds in the early morning. Only the service rivals the view at Casa del Gavilan. Rooms and grounds are immaculate; the staff unobtrusive, discreet and professional. We hope to make your stay at the Casa all you wish it to be. Whether enjoyed by the individual or many for seminars, workshops, receptions, weddings, reunions or gracious entertaining, Casa del Gavilan is the perfect retreat.
