taying at The Melville House
Inn is like a step back into the past. Built c. 1750 and on the National
Register of Historic Places, The Melville House is located in the heart of the
Newport's Historic Hill District.
Clarke Street, which is still lit by gas, is one of the quietest streets in Newport. This street of interesting old colonial buildings is just one block up from Thames Street; where the Brick Market Place and the harbor front are located. There you can find many of the city's finest restaurants, luxurious sailboats, antique shops and galleries. We are also within walking distance to Newport's many places of worship such as Touro Synagogue (the oldest in the U.S.), Trinity Church (built in 1726) and Saint Mary's Church (where President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline). The Tennis Hall of Fame, the famous and lavish mansions of the Vanderbilts, Astors and the Belmonts, the Naval War College and Newport's finest ocean beaches are also very close to The Melville House.
The French General Rochambeau quartered some of his troops at the 39 Clarke Street address when they fought in the Revolutionary War under President George Washington. The house where Washington, Rochambeau and Washington's envoy, Major General Marquis de Lafayette, met is across the street. The enlisted men stayed at The Melville House. Just down the block is the building that still houses America's oldest military unit in continuous service under its original charter in 1741, the Newport Artillery Company.
Most people think of Newport as part of the gilded age of Victorian living: a place where America's 'royalty', its wealthiest families, built, lived and lavishly decorated their 'summer cottages.' The Melville House is one of the few inns in Newport dedicated to the Colonial Style and decorated in the simple tastes of the early colonists. The seven rooms of the Melville House are furnished in a traditional Colonial style and are available with both private and shared baths. A romantic fireplace suite is available during the winter months.
Breakfast is served in a sunny breakfast room featuring our homemade granola, muffins and home baked breads with additional items such as buttermilk biscuits, scones, Yankee cornbread, stuffed French toast, fresh fruit sourdough pancakes and Rhode Island Johnnycakes. Many dishes are made with fresh herbs from our garden! Guests in the fireplace suite are greeted with champagne upon arrival, treated to after dinner drinks and served breakfast in bed the next day.
An afternoon tea is served everyday featuring refreshments, homemade biscotti and a hearty soup on cold days. Guests can enjoy a cup of tea or our special Melville House Blend coffee, a glass of sherry and a snack, as we discuss the day's activities and our favorite places for dinner. The innkeepers are always available to share with their guests their Newport experiences and do their best to make a visit as pleasant as possible.
The Melville House has received numerous compliments for the gourmet breakfasts and have been invited by authors who have stayed here to submit recipes for publication in their books. Rise and Dine, Savory Secrets from America s Bed & Breakfast Inns, by Mary Claman published three of our breakfast recipes.
The Melville House has been inspected by Mobil Travel Guide, the American Automobile Association (three diamond rating) and was featured as one of 29 "Weekend Getaways, for a delightful change of scenery" in Good Housekeeping Magazine. Bernice Chesler, renowned Bed & Breakfast guide book author said: "Location: Terrific" in her book Bed & Breakfast in New England, 5th edition; "A good value in the heart of Colonial Newport ..we appreciate anew its unpretentious atmosphere ..guest rooms (have) a cozy feel", states Best Places to Stay, New England, 6th Edition.
