Bed and Breakfast Inns of North Americaefferson's most romantic bed and breakfast is Old Mulberry Inn. Located in the historic district, the inn offers five distinctively decorated guest rooms and three-course gourmet breakfasts. Rooms feature big beds, antiques and heirlooms, original art, footed tubs, showers, fluffy towels, cable TV and VCR, CD players, ceiling fans, and fresh flowers.

Built in the style of a northern Louisiana plantation, Old Mulberry Inn Bed and Breakfast is a stunning combination of 21st-century comforts and 19th-century charm. The owners chose an architectural style that represents the antebellum heyday of Jefferson, culling antiques shops and salvage yards to furnish the stately Greek Revival inn. The old is married - for guests' comfort - with the best of the new: double-paned windows, interior sound-proofing insulation, electronic air cleaners, zoned central air, and a built-in sound system.

Named for the oldest mulberry tree in Jefferson and situated on park-like grounds, Old Mulberry Inn Bed and Breakfast is just a few doors from the home where Lady Bird Johnson lived as a teenager. She may well have plucked mulberries from the century-old tree which dominates the inn's back yard. Our extensive landscaping and splendid roses earned Jefferson's coveted "Garden of the Month" award. Pause long enough to smell our roses, pick mulberries, or just listen to the birds which populate our private "park." Settle into a back porch rocker or the porch swing and let the gentle movement instill peace and calm in your soul.

If it's too chilly outdoors, cuddle up on the leather sofa and watch the flames dance in the fireplace. All around you in the library are the latest magazines, books, and a wealth of information about Jefferson's colorful past. Or grab a movie, some cookies or chips and retreat to your room. Take a nap before dinner. Arrange for a relaxing massage in the privacy of your room. Or venture out. Situated in the Historic District, Old Mulberry Inn Bed and Breakfast is just a short stroll from shopping, dining, museums, and tour homes.

Awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and homemade biscotti in the library. At 9 o'clock, join other guests in the grand dining room for a three-course gourmet breakfast served on fine English and European porcelain with French and Swedish crystal purchased on the owners' trips abroad. Signature dishes include Baked Pears with Cranberries, California Artichoke Quiche, Rocky Mountain Grits, and Mulberry Almond Coffeecake.

Old Mulberry Inn has been featured in Southern Living, the L.A. Times Magazine, and the travel sections of major Texas newspapers and has won the stamp of approval from AAA (3 diamonds) and thousands of guests like YOU - guests who appreciate spotless rooms, pressed linens, sparkling-clean bathrooms, attentive service, and memorable breakfasts. If you like old houses but dislike the dust and musty odors which may accompany an older structure, Old Mulberry Inn is the place to stay in Jefferson, Texas.

"This classy five-room inn stands apart," wrote Travel Editor Harry Shattuck in a Houston Chronicle story featuring just three inns in the state. Each of the five spacious rooms has a king or queen-size Sealy Posturepedic bed, designer details, cable TV and VCR, CD player, ceiling fan, and private bath with footed tub equipped with a stand-up shower.

Attention to detail in room furnishings and accessories at the Old Mulberry Inn often prompts first-time guests to ask, "Who is your decorator?" The answer is, "We decorated and that's the fun part." One guest asked us to consider decorating his summer place in Nantucket! You may even get some decorating ideas for your own home.

The inn's well-traveled owners, Donald and Gloria Degn, have created a bed and breakfast which represents the very best of the inns they themselves have experienced here and abroad. Old Mulberry Inn combines the look of the past with the comforts of today while reflecting the nineteenth-century charm of historic Jefferson. Gloria, a retired high school English teacher, and Donald, formerly home and garden editor for a California newspaper, met while earning postgraduate degrees at the University of Illinois. The couple have remodeled or rebuilt several homes over the past three decades. Old Mulberry Inn, their most recent effort, blends so well with its antebellum neighbors that locals call it "the new house that looks old."
