errell Castle, built in
1894, sits on a one-acre site, with streets on three sides. There is
a large yard which can be fully lighted by party lights for evening
functions. A wide variety of plants
and trees can be found on the grounds. The large front porch is a popular
spot for guests to gather for early morning coffee and late night conversation,
or just to spend quiet time to gather their thoughts.
The
Castle is an example of Victorian elegance and comfort. There are many
fine antiques throughout the many rooms, mixed with modern pieces of
similar decor. The Central Hall is a distinctive feature of the architect's
style. It serves as the focal point of the home's design. All the major
rooms open off this Hall, and it even includes a "courting niche" with
fireplace, and an entrance from the porte cochere.
The
staircase, with its carved, harp-shaped newel posts is considered an
architectural highlight, as are the inlaid borders or the parquet floors. The
stairwell was originally noted for being a three-story open spiral staircase
with no visible means of support. Thus, one could look down from the
upper floors all the way down to the first. "The 80 pound brass and
crystal chandelier in the Central Hall is at least as old as the house".
The Library
is very much as it was originally. The outstanding feature is the molded
brickwork of the fireplace and mantelpiece. It is the most impressive
of the nine fireplaces in the house. All of the cabinetwork
is original, and features an ingenious system of adjustable shelving.
The light fixture, believed to be part of the original house was discovered
by an earlier restoration in the kitchen, all black with tarnish. When
cleaned, however, it was found to be nickel-plated.
Most of the 9 bedrooms have king-size beds. There are romantic fireplaces in several of the guest rooms, and well stacked bookcases and TVs make all the rooms places in which you will want to linger. If that wasn't enough you still have to have the gourmet, two-course breakfast served in the exquisitely designed dining room.
