ocated in the heart of Torrey, Utah, the Schoolhouse Bed & Breakfast Inn is the place where Capitol Reef meets comfort! Ten suites provide a range of sizes and styles for your taste and requirements. Renovated in 2004, this historic building was the lifeblood of the town after it was completed in 1917. It housed the elementary school, and hosted community events including dances, boxing, and sporting events until it closed in 1954. Its dances were sometimes attended by notorious bank robbers Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Locals still tell of their grandparents' letting Butch stay in their homes for a meal and a bed. He always left them a gold coin under his plate. The area around Torrey was often called "Robbers Roost" because outlaws found it easy to hide their horses and stash from the Feds in the rugged terrain and slot canyons.
The spectacular natural, red rock environment of Wayne County has been dubbed "the cleanest air in America." Every star in the galaxy and even the Milky Way can be easily seen at night. There is no quiet like the quiet of Torrey and Capitol Reef National Park! You hear only breezes, birds, and maybe the Fremont River, if you're close enough. Scores of bird species make their home here in the warmer months and many others migrate through each year. Bald eagles are frequently spotted. There is a deep sense of spirituality found in the land, reminiscent of the ancient Fremont and Anasazi Indian tribes indigenous along the Fremont River corridor. Ancient petroglyphs and rock art can be found throughout the Park.
Just a short walk from the schoolhouse, huge old Cottonwood trees lining Main Street along the canal remind us of Torrey's unique pioneer past. Many hundred-plus-year-old barns still stand proud yet withered and grayed. Two fine-art galleries, gift shops, a coffeshop/bookstore, and a general store line Main Street, along with two award-winning restaurants, the Diablo Cafe and Capitol Reef Cafe. Several other top restaurants are within a short driving distance!
