olonel Charles Washington, younger
brother of George Washington, established Charles Town, home of The
Carriage Inn, in 1786. The Inn, built fifty years later for Dr.
Taliaferro Stribling, is a
Federal style home located in the historic district on a shady acre.
The builders' marker, carved by craftsmen "Forde & Snyder", graces the
walkway leading to the house. The inn is listed in the National Register
of Historic Places. Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Philip Sheridan met
in the "East Parlor" in 1864 to discuss strategy for the Shenandoah
Valley Campaign. The Rose Room once harbored General "Stonewall" Jackson's
battle flag that was presented by ladies of Jefferson County to the
first commander of the Second Virginia Regiment.
Guests
may swing on an inviting porch or relax under large shade trees. Early
risers may see spectacular sunrises in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills.
Each of the six bedrooms is large and airy, with private bath and queen-size
four poster beds. Main house rooms are centrally air-conditioned. Suites
have private televisions. An additional TV is available for other room
guests in the second floor common lounge. Enjoy a full multi-course
breakfast each morning. Most guest rooms have working fireplaces, as
does the West Parlor. Discover the Civil War mementos displayed in
the West Parlor or share our
books and games. Fine dining awaits
at area restaurants
only three blocks away.
